Hair How-To: Hot Chocolate Brunette

Hair How-To: Hot Chocolate Brunette

Rich, multifaceted brunettes are trending for fall/winter, and what better way to embrace the seasons than with this dimensional hot chocolate shade?

“This type of color is best for a client with virgin hair who is looking to cover their grays and wants some natural-looking dimension,” says #KCEXPRESSIVES Stylist Chelsea Schmitt, whose deep, natural-looking brunette hair color that she gave her client inspired Keratin Complex’s artistic team to create its own variation of the look.

“For my first formula, I started by applying the retouch to cover the grays and feathered the color down to blend it into the hair a little past where the grays ended to avoid a harsh line,” explains Schmitt. “I chose shades Keratin Complex KeraLuminous® 5N and 5A because I tried to get as close as possible to the natural hair level.

“I wanted the results to be warm, but not overly warm—that’s why I added some 5A to help balance it out. Then, I went back in with my second formula and used it as a lowlight to add dimension to the hair. I chose 6NA so the lowlight would blend with the retouch and the color wouldn’t go too dark on the ends. The mids to ends of the hair were a little lighter than the roots. I wanted to bring the color down to make it all cohesive. Lastly, for all the ends that were left out that I didn’t apply color to, I applied clear gloss to add shine to the hair. I used the natural tone of the mids to ends of the hair as a highlight so everything would blend together.”

  3. Continue throughout the entire head.
  4. Next, section the head back into 4 sections.
